Unbeknown to us as we swanned around the museums of Canberra, the worst bushfire in 50 years was closing in on the capital. We emerged to find the sky black and the smell of burnt eucalyptus permeating the air. Fortunately it came from the south and west leaving our road north to Sydney open.
